Late comment, but for me, at least, this comes across as perhaps trying to restrain your own feelings/"killing" your own heart because it is too wayward, lacks self-control, gets attached to the wrong people and ends up hurting you. And since dogs are known for their unrestrained emotions, that works well as the representation of said "heart".

Of course, it's possible that I'm interpreting this piece the wrong way. :)
